Sports Acupuncture

During the summer I completed an advance course in Sports Acupuncture Techniques. Along with two of my colleagues at the clinic, Denise (Blount) and Rob (Chernick), I have been using Medical Acupuncture (a western interpretation) very effectively in my day to day work. It serves as an incredibly useful addition that we integrate along with osteopathic treatment. However this was my first real encounter with the Traditional Chinese variant (involving Meridians etc).

The course was taught by the internationally renowned acupuncturist Bernard Nolan.

Bernard studied oriental medicine in both Japan and Korea. In a long and varied career he has taken acupuncture to a diverse range of settings, from top Premiership football teams (like Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City), the NHS and Olympic athletes.

For the duration of the course we were based at the Roger Bannister Running Track (where he broke the 4 minute mile) which is part of the University sports complex in Oxford.

The course looked at a range sports injuries from a Chinese perspective including:

  • Headaches
  • Tennis Elbow
  • Wrist Conditions
  • Tenosynivitus
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Shin Splints
  • Knee Conditions
  • Sciatica
  • Ankle conditions
  • Sports Acupuncture

Sports Acupuncture for the lower limb.

  • Bernard studied oriental medicine in both Japan and Korea, specialising in acupuncture. He has worked in a diverse range of settings, from top Premiership football teams (like Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City), the NHS and Olympic athletes.

Altogether it was a great course that I would recommend to all my colleagues with an interest in learning a new approach to sports injuries and hopefully it has added a new dimension to my own practice.
