How are the big relationships in your life at the moment?

With your partner, family, boss or colleagues at work or your friends?

Is there something getting in the way? 

Is it them (you probably found yourself nodding just then) or you?

Have you even tried to work it out or have you just let that ‘old button’ of yours’ get pushed again?

 

Do you sometimes find yourself wondering how you could communicate more easily and really understand what’s important to people?

 

How would you like a great technique –quick and simple – which you can use to help your move forward and communicate with the people in your life more effectively?

Hello, my name is Mike Holland.  I’m a Trainer and Master Practitioner of Neuro Linguistic Programming  (NLP) and a Clinical Hypnotherapist and I’ve just joined the team at Cheadle Osteopathy.

One of the techniques I frequently use with clients to help them gain a different perspective with themselves and others is called Perceptual Positions.

Perceptual Positions will enable you to understand yourself and other people’s maps of reality so as to gain a better understanding of the emotions and behaviours that are present and thus make better informed decisions and choices.

What is Perceptual Positions?

It always helps if you can see a relationship or situation from the other person’s point of view.

However, by hearing and feeling things from their perspectives too is very powerful and can provide deep insights into others’ model of reality.

By acting as if you are someone else, you can begin to understand some of their beliefs, values and representations and gain a more complete understanding of how and why they might behave and react to situations and which will also expand your own self-awareness.

The three perceptual positions are:

  • Position 1 – From our own perspective,
  • Position 2 – From the perspective of another person
  • Position 3 – From the perspective of an independent observer

First Position:

Seeing, hearing and feeling the situation through your own eyes, ears and feeling the feelings felt during the original situation.

You think in terms of what is important to you, what you want to achieve and is a good position to be in for being in touch with your feelings and standing up for your own rights.

Second Position:

Stepping into the shoes of the other person and experiencing (seeing, hearing and feeling) the situation as if you were them, and as far as possible, taking on their language, physiology, values, beliefs and interests.

You think in terms of how this situation would appear or be interpreted by the other person.

You are more likely to understand how they see you and what their feelings and motivations are.

This is extra information that you can’t get if you stay stuck in your own viewpoint (of course, this ‘mind reading’ can only ever be speculation – you can’t know for sure what another person is actually thinking, but it can be frighteningly accurate).

You’ve heard the expression:

‘Before criticizing someone, walk a mile in their shoes.’

Third Position:

Standing back from a situation and experiencing it as if you were a detached observer, a fly on the wall.

This is good for detaching yourself from the emotions of a situation and gaining a dispassionate overview.  From this position, you can observe the interactions between yourself and others and provide feedback as one who is not involved.
