Treatments

BPPV is a condition that affects the inner ear. Inside your ear are tiny calcium crystals that help your brain understand where you r head is in relation to the rest of your body. It’s an important part of your balance system.

Sometimes, these crystals can shift and block part of the inner ear. When this happens, certain head movements, result in spinning and dizziness (vertigo)

Common Symptoms:

  • Brief spinning sensation when rolling in bed
  • Dizziness when looking up or bending down
  • Nausea
  • Feeling off-balance
  • Symptoms lasting seconds (but can feel longer!)
At Cheadle Osteopathy and Physiotherapy, we assess your symptoms using specific positional tests to determine:

  • Whether it is BPPV
  • Which inner ear canal is involved
  • Determine the best treatment options and make any referrals if appropriate
The Epley manoeuvre is a gentle, guided repositioning technique designed to move the displaced crystals back to where they belong in the inner ear.

It involves a sequence of specific head and body movements performed by our skilled physiotherapists.

Following diagnostic testing, if the physiotherapist feels the technique is appropriate it can be performed during your treatment.

The Epley manoeuvre – What to expect:

  • The physiotherapist will explain each step
  • The Epley manoeuvre Only takes a few minutes
  • Often provides immediate or rapid improvement
  • May need repeating 1–3 times (many patients feel better after just one session)
  • During the procedure you may feel dizzy (actually a sign it’s working) and it will pass once the crystals have moved into their correct position.
Not everyone responds the same but most people notice quick improvement:

  • Reduced spinning / dizziness within 24–48 hours
  • Feeling steadier and more balanced over the following days
  • Returning to normal everyday activities quickly
  • You may need to repeat the procedure again, if not completely resolved. Your physiotherapist will explain this to you.

Occasionally, BPPV can recur, but it is easily treated again if needed.
