- 93% of UK adults will experience back pain at some point in their lives
- 25% of back pain suffers find it difficult to perform basic tasks such as dressing, washing, cooking and eating
- Chronic back pain is defined as back pain which has persisted or been intermittent for three months or more
- Back pain is responsible for almost half of all chronic pain cases
- Half of all UK marriages ends in divorce, that increase to three quarters, where one partner has chronic pain
- 25% of people with chronic pain lose their job
- 20% of people with chronic pain consider suicide
- 10% of people with chronic pain actually attempt suicide
- 20% of chronic pain patients develop mental health problems as a result
- Chronic pain suffers are 67% more likely to have a fatal heart attack
The true cost of back pain:
- Back pain is the leading cause of work absence. Costing the UK economy £37 million a day
- Each day it costs the NHS £1.3 Million
- £13 million per day is spent on disability benefit for those unable to work due to back pain
- Back pain costs the UK tax payer and the economy a staggering £19 billion per year
