As part of Back Care Week (7-11 October) we thought we would share some interesting and surprising facts about the impact of chronic back pain could have on your life.

If you’ve never experienced back pain then you may not see what all the fuss is about and don’t realise how debilitating it can be.  But did you know…..

  • 93% of UK adults will experience back pain at some point in their lives

  • 25% of back pain suffers find it difficult to perform basic tasks such as dressing, washing, cooking and eating
  • Chronic back pain is defined as back pain which has persisted or been intermittent for three months or more
  • Back pain is responsible for almost half of all chronic pain cases
  • Half of all UK marriages ends in divorce, that increase to three quarters, where one partner has chronic pain
  • 25% of people with chronic pain lose their job
  • 20% of people with chronic pain consider suicide
  •  10% of people with chronic pain actually attempt suicide
  • 20% of chronic pain patients develop mental health problems as a result
  • Chronic pain suffers are 67% more likely to have a fatal heart attack

 

 

The true cost of back pain:

  • Back pain is the leading cause of work absence.  Costing the UK economy £37 million a day
  • Each day it costs the NHS £1.3 Million
  • £13 million per day is spent on disability benefit for those unable to work due to back pain
  • Back pain costs the UK tax payer and the economy a staggering £19 billion per year
